Are freshmen required to live on campus at Duke?
All students are required—to the extent that housing is available—to live on campus for their first three years. We will continue to apply semesters spent in “study away” programs toward the three-year residency requirement. Students are guaranteed the opportunity to live on campus during their fourth year.
Are freshmen allowed to have cars at Duke?
As a first-year student, you’re allowed to bring a vehicle to campus, however, other modes of transportation are available and may be preferable: Biking is encouraged, and designated parking is available. Registering your bike has its advantages. Duke bus and van service is free to students.
Does Duke have a curfew?
No group gatherings indoors. Common rooms and other gathering spaces in residence halls will be closed until further notice. A curfew of 9:00 p.m. will be in place for all undergraduate students on campus.
Do Duke students do parties?

Can you pick your roommate at Duke?
Random Roommates Only. Duke University takes away from first-year students the ability to pick their roommates. This move goes against recent trends — and raises questions about diversity, tolerance and the college experience.
Is Duke a closed campus?

How are dorms assigned at Duke?
First-year assignments are done on a random basis. Duke University is committed to encouraging our students to embrace new experiences, and our random assignment process allows students to be exposed to a myriad of cultures, viewpoints, and value systems.
Can you choose your roommate at Johns Hopkins?
The University will no longer allow first-year students to choose their own roommates beginning with the Class of 2026. Hopkins will follow peer institutions like Duke University, Vanderbilt University and Stanford University in transitioning to a university-determined roommate assignment process.
Can I walk my dog on Duke campus?
Among the lush greenery and gardens of the beautiful campus visitors will find many attractions, educational and recreational events, walking paths, historical sites, and more. Dogs are allowed on campus; they must be well behaved, under their owner’s control, leashed, and cleaned up after at all times.

What day do students move in for Fall 2019?
Fall 2019 Move Dates Fall move-in for first-year students is Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Fall move-in for returning students begins Friday, August 23, 2019. Fall move-out for students not returning for the spring 2020 semester is Tuesday, December 17, 2019 by 12:00 pm (noon).
When will move-in times be communicated for each student?
Specific move-in times for each student and residence hall will be communicated in mid-July.
What are the move-in and move-out dates?
Spring move-in (residence halls open) is Sunday, January 2, 2022. Spring move-out is Monday, May 2 by 12:00 pm (noon) for undergraduates. Final spring move-out is Monday, May 9 by 12 pm (noon). Term I housing move-in is Tuesday, May 11, 2022. Term I housing move-out is Friday, June 24 by 12 pm (noon).
