How much is a mast bend?
A typical mast rake ranges from one to one-and-a-half degrees on a cruising masthead rig to as much as four degrees on a fractional racing rig. A mast should never be raked forward unless there is something unusual in the boat design (You’ll know if this is the case!).
What is in mast furling?
What is an in-mast furling mainsail? Unlike a traditional mainsail that is hoisted and doused vertically with a halyard, an in-mast furling mainsail wraps around a tube inside a hollow mast. It is unfurled by an outhaul line and furled back in with a line labelled as the “inhaul.”
How long should my mainsheet be?
between 42 and 46 feet
The ideal length seems to be between 42 and 46 feet. The thickness of your mainsheet will affect both the grip you can have on it and the amount of friction as it goes through the blocks (a thicker line will have more friction).
How long do sailboat lines last?
As long as chafe does not enter into the picture, dock lines seems to last beyond the six years I give them. In the slip, I usually replace one line a year – I use six, so that is about as far as I let them go. Still, the ones I have retired seem to be in great shape and I use them as dock lines when cruising.
How are sails furled?
Furling refers to stowing or dousing a boat’s sail by flaking (folding), packing (like stuffing a spinnaker into a bag), or stowing it in part or whole using roller furling.
When can you fly a spinnaker?
On a light-to-medium day, some spinnakers can be carried to advantage when the apparent wind is well forward (as close as 55 to 60 degrees relative from the bow), but they could cause a broach and a bad weather helm at the same apparent wind angle in heavier air.
