Can teak furniture be refinished?
Teak is a very hard tropical wood with a very dense grain. It can really stand up to the test of time. Even if it’s been years since it had that original finish, it can be restored to its former glory the easy way just with a good cleaning and oiling.
Can weathered teak be restored?
Teak oxidizes and turns gray quickly, and while some people find this attractive, others prefer the honey-tan hues of fresh teak. You can often restore weathered teak just by sanding it, but if the discoloration goes deep, or if there is a surface layer of mold, it may be easier to scrub it with a cleaner.
Should teak furniture be sanded?
Lightly sanding teak wood will reveal a fresh and glowing finish below the surface level. This will restore the original honey brown glow. Sanding can be a bit more difficult on furniture that has hard to reach areas so you have to work around these spots by hand.
How do you clean weathered teak?
The best way to clean your teak furniture is to scrub it down with a solution of soapy water and a splash of either white vinegar or bleach. You can then hose it down (at a normal water pressure) to remove the soapy solution and any build-up of dirt, grime, bird-droppings and so on.
Is it OK to sand teak wood?
Teak wood dries rather quickly so once the teak wood is dry, it can be sanded to smooth out the grain and the roughness that occurs after it is cleaned. Use an 80-grit sandpaper first to knock down the grain and then use a 120-grit sandpaper to make the teak wood smooth and ready for finish.

Stains can be applied to plantation teak, though at most we would suggest a semi-transparent stain to not cover up the beautiful texture and grain of the wood. Sand the wood with 220 grit sandpaper and then apply a commercial sealer with a rag. Let dry and then lightly sand again with 220 grit sandpaper.

Can you use vinegar to clean teak?
Using a teak cleaner or a homemade solution of vinegar and warm water (1 cup vinegar to 4L of water), evenly wash down the surface with a soft cloth. Let the vinegar solution soak into the teak for about 15 minutes before cleaning it with a sponge in line with the timber grain.

If you have one small piece of teak furniture, you can opt to sand it by hand. What sandpaper grit is best for a teak table, though? Start with 80-grit sandpaper to knock down the wood grain and remove any minor scratches. Then, you can finish with 120- or 150-grit sandpaper to smooth it all out.
Can you use Murphy’s oil on teak?
If it’s dirty or dusty you’ll want to wipe it down with a damp rag. According to my grandmother don’t ever use Murphy’s Oil Soap (or any soap) on teak. Don’t let water sit on it. Whether it’s a glass with condensation or a sponge that you’re using to wipe it down, dry it off immediately.
