Getting there. To reach the car park at the start of this walk, take the B6342 South out of Rothbury. After about 2 miles, turn right on the sharp bend near the National Park boundary sign, onto a single track road. Follow this road, passing the Lordenshaws car park on your right.

There are three car parks at Bolam Lake – all open during daylight hours (they are locked at night). Parking is FREE for 1 hour (you still need a ticket) and chargeable for anything over this (see below for prices – correct January 2020 ). Use postcode NE20 0HE and follow the signs.

It’s about 1.3 miles there and back and the total walk can be done in about an hour depending on your fitness and time at the top 🙂 I do this route often with my young family and it only takes us about an hour in total.
Do you have to pay to park at Roseberry Topping?
The car park immediately at the foot of the Topping is managed by the North Yorkshire Moors National Park Authority and it costs a few quid to park there. But the toilets are free. There is a big layby about three hundred yards up the road where you can park for free.

How to get there Take the A696 Jedburgh road north from Newcastle. At Belsay take the Bolam road following it left past Bolam lake. Approx 1 mile along this road, Bolam Fence Houses are on the left at a crossroads. Start:- go past the cottages with care along the track as it is uneven in places.
