What is punsch made of?
It is made by the mixing of spirits (arrack, brandy or rum) with arrak tea (lemon & spices), sugar, and water, and was first brought to Sweden from Java in 1733. The spirit arrack is the base ingredient in most punsches, also imported into Europe by the Dutch from their colony in Batavia, Dutch East Indies.

Do you add water to arak?
Since Arak is considered a strong drink it is rarely drunk straight (in its clear state) but is usually mixed with water and ice. The exact way to do it is to fill the cup with 1/3 arak, then add 2/3rds water (turning it a milky white color), and then add ice.
