How do you base weld skis?
Cut away any hanging or loose pieces of base material that will no longer serve any purpose.
- Take your lighter and begin heating the P-Tex stick.
- Core Shots.
- Now that the ski is clean you are going to need base weld or sometimes called metal bond.
- Begin pressing firmly down on the base weld using the metal scraper.
What can I use instead of PTEX?
There is a product called JB Weld that works instead of P-tex and will sort of re-build your edge if your edge got pulled out. You will find it in a harware store for 5-6 bucks. It is more durable than P-tex and will weld better to your core, but it does not hold wax. clean up the wound, drown it in epoxy.

How much does it cost to repair a core shot?
A tune with a core shot that large would run folks between $60-$80. It’s a lot of work. If you use p-tex, I recommend a base welder for the repair, which is a hot air gun that you use to melt p-tex. Many old-school ski shops have these.
What are ski bases made of?
Base Material The base of your skis are built of a material called ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) and are generally only a millimeter or two thick. Ski bases utilize a “sintered” UHMW that has tiny pores that accept wax, allowing an improved glide across the snow.

Can you ski on skis with a core shot?

This type of ding is especially detrimental to the ski because it allows moisture to penetrate the core, and in skis with a wooden core, this could potentially lead to rot within the ski.

Why do skis have a wood-core?
Wood has a very different stiffness than the fiberglass and plastic that surrounds it in the ski, and as a result, vibrations are damped out and wood-core skis feel very stable. Wood also has more stable properties than foam and, because of this, it’s less likely to degrade and lose camber and stiffness over time.
How do you get PTEX to stick?

- Clean the edges of the gouge and remove any loose material.
- Sand the core shot to roughen it for better adhesion.
- Get a cheap soldering iron to melt in the repair material.
- Melt in a layer of copolymer/metalgrip – this is a more rubbery material that adheres well to coreshots and metal.
Can you use rubbing alcohol to clean ski bases?
If there is dirt or a non-sticky substance on the skin, isopropyl alcohol will work very well. Isopropyl alcohol is inexpensive, easily accessible and nontoxic. We use it to clean the bases of skis after they have been stone ground and before we start the waxing process.
