Can you use oil pastels with encaustic?
You can use encaustic wax cakes, oils, paint sticks, dry pigments, chalk pastels or oil pastels, depending on the required effect.
What is encaustic pigment?
Encaustic wax is a historical painting technique where the wax is heated up and painted with. Encaustic paint is a combination of beeswax, pigment and a small amount of hardener (either dammar resin or carnauba wax). The paint is solid at room temperature so you need to melt it before it can be applied.

Using a palette knife or butter knife, mix wax with pigment in a small dish until completely combined, (adjust the wax to pigment ratio depending upon the transaprency desired). Apply with a lint-free cloth or soft steel wool, being sure to work the wax into any grooves or pits of the wood.

- To make colored candles use 4 to 8 drops of a candle liquid dye per 1 pound of candle wax.
- After calculating and melting your desired amount of candle wax remove from the heat source.
- Add the liquid candle dye between 150°F – 170°F and stir until it blends into the wax.
How long do pigment sticks take to dry?
