Can I use unmodified thinset under DITRA?
To set DITRA over concrete or gypsum, Schluter-Systems recommends an unmodified thin-set mortar meeting the requirements of ANSI A118.
Will modified thinset stick to DITRA?
The Schluter website says it is fine to use MODIFIED thinset to adhere the Ditra to the plywood subfloor, however they specify UNMODIFIED thinset to adhere the tiles to the Ditra.
Can you use modified thinset on uncoupling membrane?
It’s important to note that latex-modified thinset can still be used between the membrane and the subfloor because it is not impervious. However, unmodified thinset should be used between the membrane and the tile.
How long does unmodified thinset take to cure?
With standard modified thin-set mortar the Tile Council of North America says it can take from 14 to more than 60 days to cure properly. In this case, an unmodified thin-set mortar would be best suited, as the mortar is able to properly hydrate and cure faster (typically within 24 hours).
What Thinset can I use with Schluter?
For all the substrates listed in this Handbook (e.g., gypsum board, cement backerboard, etc.), Schluter SET™, ALL-SET™, FAST-SET™ or an unmodified thin-set mortar is recommended.
What happens if you use modified thinset with Kerdi?
Modified thinset mortars aren’t recommended for use with Kerdi because they must dry out to gain strength, whereas the membrane inhibits drying, which can lead to unpredictable results. For example, if a shower is used before the mortar has cured properly, leaks and polymer leaching can occur.
What Thinset do I use with Kerdi membrane?
Schluter SET™, ALL-SET™, FAST-SET™ or an unmodified thin-set mortar must be used to construct all KERDI seams to ensure watertightperformance of the system.
Is unmodified thinset the same as uncoupling Thinset?
Yes, there are several terms used to describe a cement-based tile mortar that does not contain any polymer such as unmodified, non-modified and dry-set mortar. MAPEI’s Uncoupling Membrane Mortar does not contain polymer and is considered non-modified.
Is uncoupling mortar the same as unmodified?
Uncoupling Membrane Mortar is an unmodified, dry set, medium bed mortar that was created for use with uncoupling membrane and waterproofing membrane.
Do I need underlayment for DITRA?
In order to protect the integrity of the tile assembly, an underlayment that performs multiple functions is required. Schluter®-DITRA is specifically designed to allow the installation of ceramic and stone tile over any even and load-bearing substrate.
How long before you can walk on DITRA?
When an excessive load is applied onto the Ditra surface after installation, the load is transferred to the substrate through the cavity. Ditra-set only takes 25 to 30 minutes to dry. These advantages allow you to walk on the Ditra surface before tiling or even right after installing the Ditra.
How long does unmodified thinset take to dry?
24 to 48 Hours You may notice that the edges of the thinset or the thinset showing through the grout lines looks dry. Don’t be fooled by this.
Can you tile right after laying DITRA?
Once DITRA has been installed on the substrate, tile can be installed right away. No need to wait for the mortar to cure.
How long does thinset take to dry under DITRA?
The thin-set used on the Ditra surface takes almost 24 hours to dry. After tiling, ensure that no pressure or weight is applied to the tiles for the next 24 hours.
Does Ditra increase the strength of unmodified thin-set mortar?
Portland cement-based unmodified thin-set mortars are dependent on the presence of moisture for hydration in order to gain strength. Since DITRA is impervious, it does not deprive the mortar of its moisture.
When to use modified or unmodified thinset?
When to Use Modified or Unmodified Thinset. If there wasn’t enough moisture, the thinset wouldn’t be strong enough to bond the tile to the subfloor. Unmodified thinset consists simply of cement, finely graded sand and water retention agents. It’s mixed with water before it’s ready to be spread out on the subfloor.
Can you use thinset between Ditra and tile?
Ditra is impervious, and such large porcelain tiles are essentially impervious, so no air can get through with the tiles on top and the Ditra on the bottom. The thinset won’t dry. Unmodified thinset cures, which is not the same as drying with air, so that’s why you use it in between the Ditra and tile.
Can I use modified thin-set mortar to set tile over the membranes?
In general, we don’t recommend the use of modified thin-set mortar to set tile over the membranes because these mortars must air dry to cure properly. When sandwiched between two impervious layers such as DITRA and porcelain tile,…
