What is a normal Fundoscopic exam?

Funduscopic examination is a routine part of every doctor’s examination of the eye, not just the ophthalmologist’s. It consists exclusively of inspection. One looks through the ophthalmoscope (Figure 117.1), which is simply a light with various optical modifications, including lenses.

Is fundus photography necessary?

Fundus photographs are not medically necessary simply to document the existence of a condition. However, photographs may be medically necessary to establish a baseline to judge later whether a disease is progressive.

Is fundus photography safe?

In countless retinal examinations and photographs performed over the past century, there are no reports of photic injuries from standard ophthalmoscopy, fundus photography or fluorescein angiography, despite the fact that injuries would be detected and documented in subsequent retinal examination and imaging.

The examination should take place in a suitably darkened room. The patient’s right eye should be examined with the examiner’s right eye, and vice versa. The patient is asked to focus on an object in the distance, and the examiner’s head is kept vertical to permit this.
