What is improvisational piecing?
Improv Piecing is a piecing technique that takes quilt making in a different direction for the Modern Quilter. The Traditional or Contemporary quilter will have a plan with specific blocks and colors in each location pieced with precision 1/4″ seams. Quilters using Improv piecing are not bound by those rules.
What are improv quilts?
An Improvisational Quilt is a quilt made without specific intention. A style of the Modern Quilter, most Improvisational or Improv quilts just begin, not with a concept necessarily, but grows out of improv piecing and develops as the quilter stitches it. Each quilter has their own style, method and motivation.
What does FQ mean in quilting?
Fat quarters are a standard cut of fabric, frequently seen in quilting fabrics. When purchasing fabric, it typically comes by the yard or meter. As it comes off the bolt, if you buy a quarter yard, the piece would be 9 inches by whatever the width of the fabric is.
What is crumb quilting?
Crumb quilting is basically scrap quilting with really small scraps or crumbs of fabric! Think about all those small shapes and bits of fabric- the really little ones- maybe less than 2″.
What is meander quilting?
Stippling is also referred to as Meandering because the lines randomly meander over your quilt without crossing. It can be a bit tricky to learn how to quilt Stippling without stitching yourself into a corner.

What are the best scrap packages for improvisation?
Some companies also make scrap packs or grab bags, which are perfect for improv piecing. We used a sample pack of handprinted fabrics from Maze & Vale. If you want to sort your scraps by theme or colour, you can do that now. But remember, the key to good improv blocks is the randomness.
